Illustrator Matt Mahurin Donates Original Artwork to SCAD

The only thing better than oohing and ahing over one of Matt Mahurin’s illustrations in print is oohing and ahing over his original work in person. Thanks to Mahurin’s recent donation to SCAD’s Special Collections, students will be able to do exactly that!

Matt Mahurin is a renaissance man who has mastered traditional and digital illustration, photography and video. Consequently, he has left an indelible mark on the world of visual communications. Mahurin came to SCAD last spring to present his creative genius to a crowd at Arnold Hall. During his visit to Savannah, Mahurin also facilitated a demonstration for students and faculty.He enthusiastically shared his expertise in the spring, and now he continues to give to the SCAD community through this recent donation.

The artwork Mahurin donated to the Special Collections includes two original pieces of art: the one featured here, and the other you will have to see for yourself at the Special Collections.

Special Collections is on the third floor of Jen Library; their hours during the quarter are: Mondays: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Tuesdays through Fridays: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SCAD Students Take Gold and Silver at Illustration West 50 - Society of Illustrators Los Angeles Competition

Gold Medal Student Award by Julia Yellow- BFA Student

Savannah, Georgia – SCAD students had an unparalleled showing at Illustration West 50, the 50^thannual Illustration West Competition sponsored by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles (SILA). SCAD students earned both gold and silver medals along with over 100 certificates of merit. SILA is the largest juried illustration competition west of New York, created to promote the professional status of illustration art.

“Winning so spectacularly at SILA puts SCAD illustration students at the forefront of illustration,” said SCAD Chair of Illustration Allan Drummond. “SILA is a world-class competition. The communication arts industry looks to the West Coast to see the very latest developments in illustration. The sheer volume of accepted entries for SCAD and the diversity of ideas and styles is a testament to SCAD Illustration’s focus on both the nurturing a student’s individual voice, and our focus on professional career-focused work.”

Student Silver Award: Gautam Dutta - MFA Student

The Student Gold Medal and a $1,000 scholarship went to senior illustration student Julia Yellow. The Student Silver Medal and a $750 scholarship went to graduate illustration student Gautam Dutta.

In addition, SCAD illustration professors Mohamed Danawi and Daniel Powers submitted pieces that were accepted in the professional category.

All the awarded work is eligible to be displayed on the SILA Web site with the artists’ name and contact information. This Web site is a valuable resource for potential employers and collectors.

Select work will also be displayed at the Illustration West 50 Exhibition at Gallery Nucleus, 210 East Main St., Alhambra, California, at a date to be announced.

Question: what do horse hooves and chicken feet have in common with lucha libre? Answer: you can find examples of these hanging on the walls in Morris Hall!

More than 36 colorful pieces of artwork created by illustration professors Jacqui Mair and Ryan Sanchez are currently on display in SCAD’s Illustration Department. Mair and Sanchez are the two newest members of the department’s faculty, and their incredible images attest to the diverse talents and expertise they bring to their students. Both artists are impossible to pin down when it comes to singular illustrative techniques — the two play with paint, collage, digital and mix media. Similarly, both artists experiment with image-making, and the results are unexpected, delightful and sometimes shocking. Both illustrators combine edgy, contemporary aesthetics with brilliant concepts, so it’s no surprise that their clients include, among others, Clarion Books, The Financial Times, Spin and New York Magazine.

Jacqui Mair studied Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic UK and earned her M.A. in print-making at the Royal College of Art London. She was awarded a French Scholarshipto study for three months in Europe, and this award started a long working relationship with Marseille, France, and still continues today. Over the past 25 years she has combined lecturing at various institutions with her work as an artist. She has exhibited on three continents, and has established an international career as an illustrator and artist. Jacqui taught Illustration and Fine Art at the University of Portsmouth UK until March 2011 when she crossed the pond to teach Illustration at SCAD.

Ryan Sanchez was raised as a latchkey kid in the suburbs of Los Angeles. To keep himself entertained as a child, he drew on sidewalks, streets, walls, shoes, clothing, textbooks, and anything else he could get his hands on. Ryan moved on to college and earned a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California in 1995, and a B.F.A. in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in 2000. In 2002, he moved to New York where he worked as a freelancer before moving to Savannah to earn his M.F.A. in Illustration at SCAD.

Professors Mair and Sanchez’s group exhibition will be on display in the foyer of Morris Hall through March 15, 2012. Don’t miss it!

Speakers include illustrator and animator Richard Borge, who worked in editorial and corporate advertising with Sony Music and Coca-Cola, among others, illustrator and animator David Cowles, who freelanced for Time and The New York Times, among others; illustrator and animator Ed Binkley, who has worked as an award-winning professional illustrator for 30 years and motion media chair John Colette. Student Katie Cantrell Is Vanna for a Day!

Katie Cantrell, a senior illustration student, recently won a contest to be Vanna White for a day on Wheel of Fortune. She was awarded a week-long trip with a guest to Los Angeles at the end of February. During her Hollywood stay, Katie enjoyed receiving the star treatment; a vice-presidential hotel suite, dress fittings, first-class flights, and her own limo driver. SCAD students had an unparalleled showing at the 49th Illustration West Competition sponsored by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles (SILA). When the honors were announced in early January 2011, work by SCAD students walked away with unprecedented Gold and Bronze Awards along with over 150 certificates of merit.

“This is an extraordinary accomplishment,” says SCAD Savannah illustration professor Mohamed Danawi. “SCAD has an abundance of talent and we are so excited and proud that this talent is being recognized.”

“SILA is the largest juried illustration competition west of New York,” says SCAD Atlanta illustration program coordinator Rick Lovell. “For our students to do so well in such a competitive environment is a testament to the exceptional work coming out of SCAD.”

The Gold Award and a $1,000 scholarship went to senior illustration major Tran Nguyen (above). The Bronze Award and a $500 scholarship went to senior illustration major Adela Kang (below).

The faculty challenge all illustration majors to create 100 sketches drawn from life in a dedicated sketchbook, to be completed by March 14, 2011 by 5pm. Submit to Room 305.

The first 100 students to complete the challenge will receive:
*Free lifetime membership in the 100 Sketches from Life Club (no fees, no dues)
*The right to "represent" by wearing your free 100 Sketches from Life t-shirt
*A featured sketch and your name included on the list of winners on the illustration blog

Guidelines
*All sketches must be drawn exclusively from life in the medium of your choice
*Sketches should be done in a dedicated sketchbok between 6" x 9" and 9" x 12"
*Up to 10 sketches can be contour drawings; the remaining 90 should comprise a more studied or detailed approach

Catherine Moore Completes Internship at Wild Apple Graphics, Ltd.

Catherine Moore, an MFA candidate in Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design, received a two-month internship this summer at Wild Apple Graphics Ltd., a fine art prints and licensing company based out of Woodstock, Vermont. Catherine worked on-site as an art developer and designer, creating multiple art series for both wall art and licensing, combining traditional techniques in Wild Apple’s on-site studio and combining these with digital design. Among these pieces was a series of fashion prints that were included in Wild Apple’s September line.

During her internship, Catherine also learned about printing processes, licensing and print contracts, and trend and marketing research, as well as developed her skills in acrylic, watercolor, and digital mediums. Catherine continues to create work through Wild Apple on a freelance basis, which can be viewed at www.wildapple.com.

New Children's Book Illustrated by Mike Wohnoutka

BFA Illustration Alumni Mike Wohnoutka has illustrated a new children's book Can't Sleep Without Sheep. He will at a publication party for the book at the Red Balloon Bookshop in St. Paul,MN, Saturday, October 9 at 10:30 am.

The School Library Journal had this to say about the book:

The charming, rounded illustrations are set against the backdrop of a starry night with the characters bathed in the moonlight. On many spreads, the animals take up the entire space, creating a cinematic vista. The endpapers feature a series of repeated, lovely and puffy cloudlike sheep in mid-leap. Chasing the Light - New Work by Linda Warner Constantino

Professor Linda Warner Constantino will be having an exhibit of her new work in oils and watercolors. It will be held at the Art League Gallery of Hilton Head from August 9 through September 10. The opening reception will be held from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, August 10.

Professor Warner Constantino is a recent recipient of a summer presidential fellowship from SCAD that enabled her to paint in Italy for three weeks this past June. Many of the paintings in this exhibit are from this trip or inspired by it.

Savannah, GA (March 31, 2010) -- SCAD's Illustration and Graphic Design Departments have joined forces to present Collaboration and Expansion, a panel discussion about the future of these two communication art forms. The event is on Wednesday, April 14, at 6pm at the Trustees Theatre, and will be free and open to the public.
Collaboration and Expansion will address the profound changes the communication arts industry has seen over the past few years and the new opportunities these changes have opened up. The panel will look at such ground-breaking advances as the switch from print to digital and will address such issues as how illustrators and designers can navigate the new world to their best advantage, how young illustrators and designers just entering the work force can find a place for themselves in this tight economy and how creatives can collaborate with one another to make a niche for themselves in this increasingly-specialized marketplace.
Moderated by SCAD Professor of Illustration, Julie Lieberman, the panel will include Tyler Darden, art director of Virginia Living Magazine; Anita Kunz, an artist/illustrator whose work has appeared regularly in Rolling Stone, Time and The New Yorker and internationally in galleries and museums; Bridgid McCarren, art director of How Magazine; Christoph Niemann, whose illustrations have appeared on the covers of The New Yorker, Newsweek and The New York Times Magazine; Yuko Shimizu, an award-winning illustrator and one of Newsweek Japan's "100 Japanese People The World Respects," and Christopher Sickels (Red Nose Studio) , considered one of the best mini-sculptors/illustrators working today.

SCAD Illustration Student Katie Cantrell is Grand Prize Illustration Winner in Strathmore Paper Competition

SCAD Illustration major Katie Cantrell has been named a Grand Prize winner of Strathmore Papers 2010 Illustration Contest. Contestants across the country were challenged to create an illustration of green, as in recycle, reduce and reuse, to be featured on the cover of a series of Special Edition Strathmore Premium Recycled Artists Pads. Katie¹s winning design will be available in the fall of 2010 throughout North America. Katie, currently a junior, also won a $1,000 scholarship award.
Katie also has four illustration images featured on the cover of the new series of Strathmore Marker Smooth Surface Artists Pads. She is credited on the covers of the pads as providing the original artwork.

Student Darion McCoy Awarded SOI's Highest Scholarship

Senior Darion McCoy has just been awarded the New York Society of Illustrators' highest and most prestigious student scholarship, The Joyce Kitchell Award of $5000. He was chosen for his poster (shown above ) that was created for Professor Mohamed Danawi's Poster Design class.

There were 6,205 entries this year from colleges and universities nationwide. Out of that number only 195 were selected for the show, five of which came from SCAD. Only 33 of the 195 selected were awarded scholarships. Only one was chosen for the highest award that Darion McCoy received. This also marks the first time a SCAD illustration student has been awarded this coveted honor from the Society of Illustrators'Annnual Student Competition. Congratulations Darion!

Professor Powers Hosts Book Signing at Barnes and Noble

Humane Society Fundraiser Exhibition

They are from Atlanta and draw caricatures on location and in freelance illustrations. Both are previous managers of Six Flags Over Ga caricature booths. SCAD SOI Winter Quarter Meeting

The SCAD Society of Illustrators Student Club will hold it first meeting of the quarter on Thursday at 8 pm, January 14 in Morris Hall, Room 201. Erin Dziedczic from Exhibitions will be speaking as well as Nancy Richards from the Humane Society

Exhibition opportunities at Humane Society Show at Poetter Hall and the Savannah Mall will be discussed.

Also workshop ideas and a movie/homework nights that will be available will be presented.

It is a great opportunity to meet other illustration students and become involved with all kinds of opportunities.

Kurt Vargo Goes Hollywood for Legalzoom.com

Professor Vargo was invited to Los Angeles, Ca. as a guest of the ad agency, Donatwald and LegalZoom.com to pitch the companies on-line legal services for copyrights, product licensing, patents and individual family wills. The agencies production crew re-created one of Vargo's paintings as a large format background for a 30 second National television commercial. Start to finish, the whole shoot took a solid eight hours of filming,
Re-shooting live takes and out-takes with Vargo were his family, who were also invited for the five day trip to Hollywood. "It was a little intimidating with a crew of 30 people standing around, and others adjusting your clothes and re-applying make-up to my glowing bald head, mused Vargo. "I feel confident drawing lines, yet remembering them was a challenge, the common verb on the set was, "Cut!"

The SCAD Society of Illustrators recently held a "Monsters Show" of student illustrations that opened on October 30 at the Savannah Mall.First place went to Kim, Young Ju's "Monster."Second place went to Casey Crisenbery's "Dia del los Muertos."Third place went to Matthew Perusi's "Elephant Man. The show was juried and had a total of 28 pieces included in it.

Communication Arts Visits SCAD Illustration Department

Rebecca Bedrossian and Ann Telford

Ann Telford and Rebecca Bedrossian of Communication Arts Magazine visited SCAD Illustration department.They spent time in Kurt Vargo's Self-Promotion Class, (ILLU-409-Section 01) and spoke to the students about Communication Arts magazine, it's purpose, visibility and applicability to the Marketplace. They invited the students to review the "Fresh" section of their publication where young, "up and coming" talents are showcased. Both editors presented their opinions, as to the state of the current Illustration Marketplace to date. They then took the time to review each of the 14 student's work and offered constructive comments and advice to the work presented.
Both Ann and Rebecca were impressed with SCAD's computer lab facilities, and stressed the necessity for young artists to know their way around current computer technologies, its relevancy and its inclusion to their work habits if they are to stay in tune with the demands of the Marketplace's needs. Ann and Rebecca also took the time to review selected senior portfolios. The seniors were thrilled to receive such professional feedback.

This is a graduate studio course that gives students the opportunity to further their appreciation and understanding of contemporary trends in illustration while at the same time extending their own illustration skills. Exploring different approaches to illustration through professional examples from the past and the present allows the student to recognize the conceptual skills that realize an idea. Illu 221 Introduction to Scientific Illustration

Professor John Foerster
Scientific Illustration encompasses a broad range of subject matter and approaches. This introductory course emphasize accuracy and clarity in communication, combined with aesthetic quality and sensibilities. A variety of discrete systems, from the microscopic to the global, will be visually explored and rendered in detail. Prerequisite: GRDS 205 or IDUS 212 or ILLU 215 or PNTG 206 or SCPT 250 or SEQA 215.

Paul Jean - New York Times Art Director Visits SCAD

Paul Jean is currently The New York Times Art Director for the Arts and Leisure Section. He has worked for the New York Times since 1992. His work has been featured in The Society of Publication Designers, Communication Arts and the Society of Newspaper Designers publications.

American Artist's Watercolor Magazine published its cover competition finalists in this Summer's issue. SCAD Illustration MFA alumni George Sandidge's illustration was one of the 10 finalists selected. His watercolor portrait illustration was included in the cover feature article inside the magazine. George created this piece as a project in Linda Warner Constantino's Watercolor for the Illustrator class. The assignment was to create a self-portrait of one's alter ego.

Kurt Vargo received his MFA in Illustration from SCAD on June 30. It took some time over the past years taking a class per quarter, but he did it. His talent as an illustrator and a professor is held in high regard and now his degree enables him to teach on the graduate level offering more students access to his talents. Above all he proved that working hard has its rewards. What a proud moment for Kurt and his family and a great example for our students.

SOI Senior Show A Success!

The Society of Illustrators Student Club held its annual Senior Show at the Savannah Mall on the evening of May 29. Crowds of students, parents, alumni and the public attended and showed their support and admiration for our seniors. A special thanks to Professor Lieberman for overseeing the exhibit and to all members of the SOI club who worked tirelessly to put the show together. Also, great appreciation to the Savannah Mall for hosting this event. Though the show is over there are several murals painted by students from the illustration department, so stop by and check them out if you are in the area.

Professor Roger's Work Accepted to Richmond Illustrators' Club

Professor Roger's plein-air painting was accepted into Richmond Illustrators' Club 3rd Annual Juried show. They received almost 240 entries from across the the country and internationally; of those, the juror was only able to select 40 entries. The show opening is June 5th at Ghostprint Gallery. Multi award-winning New York based Illustrator Fernanda Cohen was invited by SCAD Illustration Chair Allan Drummond to judge the Sidewalk Arts festival. SCAD Illustration student Annelise Capolessa (in t-shirt) assisted her. Fernanda lectured in Arnold Hall Thursday April 23, and talked about self promotion, and all the drive and passion it takes to make it in the illustration market today.

"I can work anywhere," said Fernanda, and true to her word she was sketching t-shirt designs for GAP during her visit. She carries a portable scanner everywhere, so she was able to liaise with her client from the comfort of SCAD's Magnolia Hall.

Also invited to judge Sidewalk was Peter Giffen, Editor of Applied Arts Magazine. This was his seccond visit to SCAD. Last year he paid a visit to SCAD Illustration and spent a day reviewing portfolios. In September 2008 his magazine named SCAD Illustration in the top five innovative programs.

Show Me the Munny SCAD Illustration Student Club Show & Reception at Savannah Mall

You may be wondering what is a Munny? According to Wikipedia a "Munny is primarily a Do-it-Yourself type action figure which the owner can decorate using pens, pencils, markers, paint, and supposedly, ketchup. The action figure is made out of vinyl and has moveable joints." The SCAD Student Illustration club has taken on the challenge to illustrate these Munnys and they are on exhibition from Friday-Sunday, April 17th-19th and 24th-26th at the Savannah Mall(showroom directions from Customer Service) at Target end of the mall.

Double Entries into CA for David Riley

SCAD Illustration alumnus David Riley (2007) has had two pieces accepted for the upcoming Communication Arts Illustration Annual (to be published in August). "Tara Hears Bombing" is from a series of illustrations he completed for an upcoming book called "Camel Rider."

Teatrio’s 14th International Competition of Illustration Exhibition
Morris Hall, 2nd and 3rd Floors, March 15 – April 15, 2009

Teatrio’s 14th International Competition of Illustration, Fantasmi e Fughe or Ghosts and Get Aways, is a fantastic collection of wordless narratives realized in a variety of mediums and techniques by young illustrators the world over. Throughout the years, SCAD’s Illustration Department has participated in this prestigious international competition, headquartered in Venice, Italy; the resulting shows regularly travel to Strasbourg, Addis Ababa, Lisbon and Mexico City. With over 400 entries, a mere 30 are juried into this highly competitive show. This year, three SCAD illustration students, Susan Maier, Lauren Rolwing and Will Wenzel, had their work juried into this show, Ms. Maier being awarded the competition’s second prize.

Scientific Illustration Faculty Exhibition

The Savannah College of Art and Design and the Department of Illustration invites you to this new exhibit of faculty work. Showcasing the cumulative talents of the Scientific Illustration team, this show highlights a combination of aesthetics and meticulous accuracy that is taught in each of the professors’ courses, a formal and codified form of communication that affords students the opportunity to explore in a variety of media from pencil, computer, and paint to clay. Scientific Illustration bridges the divide between art and science, while recording and communicating the wonders of nature.

Two SCAD Students Juried into SOI Show!!

The Society of Illustrators 2009 Student Scholarship Competition announced its winners this week which included two SCAD Illustration students: Matt Kohr and Tran Nguyen both graduate students from John Foerster's Digital Illustration class.

Matt Kohr's Natural Grunge won The Dan Adel Award - $1000.

Matt had this to say about his winning illustration:

"As an environment concept artist I'm constantly thinking about how the player relates to the space they occupy. Illustrations like these are the result of working closely with an art director to convey a mood through lighting and composition. Concept art is a great field because I get to solve technical challenges with pretty pictures."

Fine Line by Tran Nguyen

Here's what Tran had to say about her entry:

"Fine Line is my interpretation of our internal struggle between the "line" of insanity and how we may embrace the illusions. What I most enjoyed about this piece was the task of making the digital painting look, well, not so digital. I find that overlaying paper textures are most helpful in incorporating the characteristics of traditional media such as the man's porous skin."

Graduate Student Lands Intership with Artist's Rep Richard Solomon

Don Rogers heard from former graduate student Kofong Hsia that she had landed an internship with Artist's Representative Richard Solomon. Richard Solomon who has been in the business over 25 years represents 20 of the top illustrators in the field, like C.F. Payne, Mark Summers and Gregory Manchess among others.

Kofong expressed her elation about this opportune internship in the following words:"I got the internship with Richard Solomon. And I'm going to start it at this Thursday.It's really an exciting experience for me! I spoke with Mr. Solomon today and he is really nice! They offer their interns chances to work with famous illustrators that they represent. I'm thrilled about this opportunity! Wow, I could learn from the top ones!"

Lacoste Themed Plates Illustrated by Allan Drummond

chairman Allan Drummond made their debut at the New York International Gift Show. The ceramics are produced by SCAD's Working Class studio, and Director Jonathan Osborne said the dishes were a 'big hit' at market.

Allan Drummond visited SCAD's Lacoste campus last year and produced the illustration which he gifted to the college's permanent collection.

30/30 Alumni Illustration Show

In honor of SCAD's 30 year anniversary, the Illustration department is hosting a show of SCAD Illustration Alumni work. 70 alumni participated with over 250 entries. The top 30 illustrations will be exhibited in Morris Hall beginning on January 30th.

There will also be an Alumni Illustration Discussion Panel held on Friday January 30th in Trustees Theater from 7-9 pm. It is open to the SCAD community. Please join us!

Recent Grad Turns Class Project into a Business

Don Rogers recently heard from former student Tascia Singleton who has developed a business hand-painting dinnerware. While at SCAD,in addition to other professors, she was influenced by a class she took entitled Illustrating the Edible in which one of the projects was to illustrate dinnerware and to actually hand paint the illustration onto the ceramic dinnerware. Tascia has since developed her own dinnerware lines entitled Let's Dish and Who's Ready for Sushi?
She has also created some pieces especially for the upcoming SCAD Galas; one design is a Marie Antoinette- inspired dessert set (four plates) called "Let Them Eat Cake-Gothic" while the other design is a 10.25" dinner plate called "Emo Boys Have Good Hair." She has donated both of her designs to the Savannah gala and will donate a set of "Let Them Eat Cake-Gothic" to the Atlanta gala.

Her design above "Fallen Star" was showcased as a "gourmet must-have" in the August 2007 issue of Palm Springs Life magazine, California's Prestige Magazine, and her dinnerware has been featured in numerous blog sites all around the world. Recent Grad Lands Internship at Carter's

Recent illustration graduate Sarah Werkheiser has landed an internship with Carter's in Atlanta, Georgia. The company specializes in clothing and other products for babies and small children.
Sarah was quite excited and remarked "I'm happy to say I have gotten an internship with Carters and will be beginning in January and could not be more thrilled! It's possible to get full time work as an Illustrator afterall!"

The illustration department is holding an illustration alumni gallery show to correspond with the SCAD Alumni illustration reunion, Jan. 30-31, 2009. The 30/30 Alumni Show will hang at Morris Hall until March 12, 2009. The 30 best pieces of work from past alumni will be chosen to represent the department’s accomplishments. Prize money will be awarded for top work. Commercial or fine art submissions are accepted.

Dan Adel Comes to Savannah

World renown illustrator and all around artist extroadinare, Dan Adel visited SCAD-Savannah in early November. He lectured about his varied career, visited classrooms and gave a portrait demonstration.
Dan is no stranger to SCAD since he and his wife Veronique live in Lacoste, France where SCAD-Lacoste students adore him.
His lecture was informative and witty chronicling his careers in both illustration and gallery art. He inspired and captivated students students with his portrait demonstration that captured a keen likeness of Professor Kurt Vargo within the first few strokes.
It was an honor to host such a talented artist who took a sincere interest in SCAD and its students!

Professors Practice What They Teach

Professors Don Rogers and Linda Warner Constantino have gotten "hooked" on plein air painting (French for fresh air or painting outside on site) during their summer break. Once a week they head out to different locations around Savannah and Bluffton and paint landscapes from life for a couple of hours. They have found it is a wonderful creative outlet and a way to practice their painting skills. Since the light changes quickly and sometimes the weather too, they are challenged to paint rapidly and must simplify what they see.

Two Sides to Every Page

When my graphite illustrations from From the Land of the White Birch were juried into the Society of Illustrators’ The Original Art exhibition, I nearly turned inside out! The Original Art show is an annual exhibition begun in 1980 by renowned children’s book illustration representative Dilys Evans. Work from contemporary children’s books is juried into this exhibition by a stellar panel of art directors, illustrators and editors. To have my work accepted into this exhibit was a major feather in my illustrator’s cap (which, of course, is an artist’s beret)!
From the Land of the White Birch was a stretch for me. It was published by a small press in Michigan, not by the usual NYC trade publishers with whom I typically work. What’s more, I illustrated the entire book in black and white, using graphite on coquilla, when I typically work in vibrant hues, using watercolor. Everything about White Birch was atypical of my publishing experience. For that reason, I was surprised and thrilled to be juried into this prestigious show.
I knew that the opening of The Original Art show would be a party, one I didn’t want to miss. So I flew to New York City to attend the reception as well as to meet with my publishers
When I walked into the Society of Illustrators, I was thunderstruck by the plethora of images hung salon-style on the walls of the old brownstone. There were images by David Christiana, Peter Sís, Diane Stanley, and Paul Zelinsky. And there was my artwork, hung between that of Richard Egielski and Jerry Pinkney, two artists whose illustration I had pored over since I began learning my craft! Seeing my pencil drawings amidst the best-of-the-best was a proud moment!
I had a ball at the reception! I met folks I’d only ever dreamed of meeting and rubbed elbows with others I was too intimidated to speak with. When I returned to my hotel that evening, I was on over the moon!
A couple of days later I was downtown at my publisher’s (not the small press which published White Birch), meeting with my editor. She was unaware that White Birch was hanging uptown at the Society of Illustrators but I was eager to let her know. As she paged through my portfolio, she oohed and aahed over my new work.
But then a strange thing happened.
When she turned the page and saw the reproductions from White Birch, she very matter-of-factly said, “Daniel, you need to take these pieces out of your portfolio. They’re weak and take away from your beautiful watercolors.”
I thought I would cry!
Instead I took a breath. My editor turned the page. And we moved on.

As I walked through SoHo returning to my hotel, I puzzled over my editor’s comment. (How typical that a multitude of the marvelous remarks can be dashed by a single, discouraging utterance!) As I mulled things over, a light bulb went off in my head and I realized how very subjective this industry is! One person can love what I do while another can hate it.
What freedom there is in this!
My professional worldview suddenly underwent a major paradigm shift. I instantly knew that I could create any sort of imagery I that pleased me. I didn’t have to allow my stylistic groove to become a rut. I could experiment, mix things up, try different things, take risks, venture outside of my comfort zone – all to please my Creative Self, not to please a publisher or an audience. Providing that I follow my heart, turn over every rock of creative possibility to see what lies beneath, and make certain that I impeccably craft everything I do, somewhere I will find a buyer for my work.
So follow your heart. Graciously accept the praise you’re certainly worthy of receiving. Judiciously accept critique of your work, paying close attention to what rings true to your Innermost Artist (and disregard the criticism that doesn’t). And pat yourself on your back knowing that if you’ve crafted your work as well as you possibly can and have truly put your heart into what you’ve created, your work will find a good home!

SCAD Illustrators Take a Bite out of the Apple

From June 16th through June 20th, eight SCAD Illustration students attended the 2008 Off-Campus program in New York City. They met with world-renowned illustrators (Murray Tinkelman, Joe Ciardiello, Ted and Betsy Lewin, Nancy Stahl & Steven Tabbutt), came in contact with the publishing world (Brian Rea/New York Times, Stacey Clarkson/Harpers Magazine, Vicki Morgan/Morgan-Gaynin, Charles Hively/3x3 Magazine & Bob Schreck/DC Comics) and viewed stunning illustrations and murals (Illustration House, the Society of Illustration, Brandywine Museum, Steinway Hall, the Old Met Building, the Raleigh Room & the St. Regis Hotel).

It was a busy and exciting time! But why take my word for it? I'll let the students of this Mighty '08th Off-Campus Trip tell you in their own words (or pictures).

100 Sketches From Life Club

During winter quarter Professor Linda Warner Constantino challenged her two Portfolio Development classes (Illu 400) to keep a sketchbook and fill it with 100 sketches exclusively drawn from life. She feels that drawing is the language of illustration and that keeping sketchbook often yields true development of a personal style or "visual voice."

Out of a total of 36 students, 20 students met the challenge. They are: Yukiko Adachi, Xavier Blain-Cruz, Shiho Hoshino, Andrew Ransom, Alana Simms, Erin Stevens, Jonathan Yoerger, Daniel Brennan, Meredith Burlage, Celia Chadwick, Katie Franchi, Hannah Inouye, Travis Johnson, Shelley Laband, Brittany Mucy, Kristin Naff, Alexandra Nikulina, Colleen Pffifner, Matt Salie, Thomas Schmuck.

These studestudents earned a commemorative t-shirt and free "lifetime" membership in the "100 Sketches From Life Club." KUDOS!!!

Barry Moser - Guest Speaker - May 7, 2008

Barry Moser is a renowned printmaker, illustrator, publisher, storyteller and founder of the Pennyroyal Press. He will be guest speaker for the illustration department on the evening of May 7, 2008 at 7:30 pm at the Student Center.

He has illustrated Moby Dick, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Caxton Bible and other literary classics. His work has been exhibited at: The British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, Harvard University, and the Library of Congress.

There will be a reception for Mr. Moser on May 8th at 5:30 pm in Alexander Hall followed by a workshop.

This will be an evening not to be missed for all illustrators and printmakers.

From the Illustrators' Partnership

In the last few days, over one thousand people have asked to be added to the Illustrators’ Partnership e-mail list. New names keep coming in by the hour. Since you’re new to these postings, let’s tell you who we are.

The Illustrators’ Partnership of America (IPA) is a group of working artists who have banded together as a sort of neighborhood watch group. We’ve united other groups representing medical illustrators, architectural illustrators, general science illustrators and cartoonists. To oppose the Orphan Works bill, we’ve teamed up with fine artists, photographers, graphic designers and textile designers.

We first warned about this legislation in March 2002 when it was just a gleam in the eyes of some activist legal scholars. In 2004 we published The Copy Left Is Not Right and set up a mass e-mail list to start alerting our colleagues to coming developments. Over the coming days, we’ll tell you what we’re doing to oppose this bill and what you can do to work with us.

For the moment, we’re not advising you to write Congress. You can – and it may do some good – but it’s best to wait until the new bill has been introduced and given a number. Then we’ll have to act fast. Its advocates will try to pass it quickly.

So what can you do now? Help us spread the word. In doing so, please don’t overstate the danger; this bill is bad enough. Wherever possible, back up assertions with facts – quotes from sources, citations, links. Our arguments have to be clear, accurate and respectful of the opinions of those on the other side.

We have a modest war chest, but great legal representation. We’re meeting now with members of Congress and we’ll work hard to make them see how this wrong-headed and poorly thought-out bill will harm the cause of creativity. We’ll follow this e-mail with another one shortly - addressing the issues others have raised about our recent interview.
